The Organisation
A great opportunity now exists for a Junior Development Engineer to join a specialist fibre optic manufacturer, who have experience in delivering specialty fibre optic assemblies, components and integrated optical solutions.
The company works very closely with customers, from the birth of new projects, through qualification to product launch, providing manufacturing capabilities including rapid prototyping, manufacturing qualification support, through to mass production.
Principal markets include Defence & Aerospace, Oil & Gas, Marine, Science and Telecoms
About the Role
The Junior Development Engineer will join the R&D team, focused on designing, testing, and development of advanced fiber-optic components. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to gain hands-on experience in optical technologies, precision mechanical design, and product development within a fast-growing high-tech environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the design, development, and validation of fiber-optic components and assemblies
- Conduct optical, mechanical, and environmental testing using industry-standard equipment
- Assist in process development and building prototypes, running experiments, collecting data, and documenting results.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to optimise product performance, improve manufacturing processes, and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Generate technical documentation, test reports, and process documentation in line with internal quality and ISO standards.
- Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality, and product teams to support new product introduction (NPI).
Qualifications & Experience
- BSc degree in Physics, Optics/Photonics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- 0-3 years of relevant experience (internships, academic projects, industrial placements all welcome).
- Basic understanding of optical principles such as alignment, coupling, polarisation, or optical and return loss.
- Familiarity with mechanical design concepts and precision assembly.
- Ability to analyse experimental data and present clear conclusions.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
